Cross Roads Blues
It wasn't done. No Nephilim had dared such a thing. It was the most dishonorable option. If one of the Nephilim could not be saved with runes or magic, then there was no other option. Alec had disagreed even when Catarina had put a sympathetic hand on his shoulder and told him that nothing on Earth could change this fate.
Nothing on Earth... but there was somewhere else that might hold the answer.
She'd called him an idiot, cursing even as she opened the portal, shoving a wooden box into his hands. Everything else, he had to find himself, she told him tartly, refusing to help him follow this particular path even if she understood why Alec was so determined. When he stepped through the portal, he found himself in the middle of a field. A subtle way to try to stop him from going through with his plan except distance really didn't matter to him.
He ran through the fields until he found a road, running with a Shadowhunter's endurance to a nearby town. Eventually, he found a cemetery to get the needed dirt. The picture was in his pocket and the last item... He couldn't bring himself to finding that last requirement. Nothing else should be harmed because of his wish to help Max.
Making his way to the crossroads that Catarina had told him about, he watched the sun set from the side of the road, waiting for full dark before finding the center of where the nearly abandoned roads intersected. Dirt crusted his nails, breaking and bleeding as he dug the hole. He probably could have used one of his blades but it seemed right to do it this way. Pain and blood to offer along with whatever else that was demanded of him.
When the hole was deep enough, Alec set the box inside. Looking down, he winced at how it didn't seem to be enough to call a demon. Pulling his knife from the sheath in his boot, he carefully cut a few locks of hair free and put the raggity offering inside. Maybe that would make up for the lack of feline artifacts. Covering the box with powdery soil, he took a few steps back, staggering to the side of the road and sitting down abruptly.
Now all he could do was wait and hope that he'd done everything right. His parents would be furious. So would Izzy and Jace, but Alec knew that his siblings would understand why he'd done it. Eventually they'd forgive him for making this choice.
