Appearance: Alec is about 6’2”, muscular from years of training to be a Shadowhunter. His most unique feature is that the majority of his body is covered in symbols that are called runes. Some are permanent and look like dark brown/black tattoos. His temporary marks look like scars. He is also covered in scars from his training and years as a Shadowhunter. The most prominent one runs along his chest from a demon attack in the first book.

Personality:
Overall, Alec is an introvert but as he has matured through the series and has learned to accept himself, he has become more outspoken. He is not someone who is talkative but he expresses himself when needed even though he is a quiet and shy person. When he does speak, he is straightforward and blunt, sometimes seeming rude despite his intentions. This can be tempered with a big brother kindness that makes him a peacekeeper among his group of friends.
He is someone who is extremely loyal to his siblings and friends. Alec is the protector in his family and helped raise his siblings when his parents were away because of Clave business. When hunting demons with his siblings, he would watch their backs instead of rushing into the fight. He is also the healer in the group, tending injuries and trying to reassure those he cares about.
At times, Alec can let his self-doubts get the better of him. He can be prone to jealousy and after years of being ignored by others, he can feel like he is 'trivial'. At one time, he let these darker emotions get the better of him, resulting in a break up with his boyfriend. Since then, he has realized the consequences of his doubts and is working on dealing with these emotions.
Despite loving deeply, Alec is self-aware enough that when he gets a chance to reunite with his boyfriend, Magnus, he doesn't automatically say yes. He loves Magnus deeply but he knows that they will keep hurting each other if they cannot work out his differences. Even knowing how much refusing will hurt them both, he is willing to walk away so that they will not continue along the destructive path they have been following.
When he does this, Magnus agrees to begin working things out which gives Alec a choice to have what would be a 'normal' life. He could settle into the type of role that is expected of a Shadowhunter, find a Nephilim guy to date since it's becoming more socially acceptable, and grow old with someone. It is something that he thought he wanted more than anything but he realizes that he loves Magnus too much to settle for normal. He knows there will be misunderstandings and pain but he is willing to take the risk if Magnus
Instead, he chooses to love someone despite all the pain that might be involved in loving someone who is immortal and according to many of his peers and some members of his family, is socially unacceptable.
This helps show that Alec is a young man full of contradictions. He was desperate for his parents' approval yet outed himself so that Magnus knew his true feelings. He is a warrior who hates killing the innocent even when that death is a mercy. When he was in the middle of a battle and had to killed humans who could not be saved from the magic inflicted on them, he wept at the loss of life and over the horrors that others can commit against each other.
He can seem cool and aloof but laughs over silly songs that he hears on the subway. He can be stubborn and snarky but tries to help his sister when her heart is breaking. He will also protect those he doesn't know and ignore the rules for the greater good. Numerous times he defied the Shadowhunter's laws to help his family and the people he loves.
Alec is growing as a person and learning to see beyond the narrow confines he was shown as 'right'. He loves fiercely and at times, impatiently. He is loyal and shows kindness in unexpected ways, offering help to those that most Nephilim would scorn. Alec is someone steadily learning about himself and learning to accept himself despite years of believing that there is something wrong with him.
Powers/Abilities/Talents:
Nephilim or Shadowhunters, are a race of individuals given special abilities by the Angel Raziel so that they can hunt demons and protect humans (Mundanes) from the supernatural. These gifts give Shadowhunters increased strength and agility, which is enhanced using magical symbols called runes that are drawn on their bodies. Some runes are permanent and protect Shadowhunters from supernatural attacks. Others are temporary and give a Shadowhunter enhanced speed, agility, mental abilities, and healing among other traits.
Because of his permanent Marks and rituals performed on him as a child, he is immune to many types of magic and mind manipulation. Most supernatural beings cannot read his mind or bespell him with glamours.
Alec has spent the majority of his life training to hunt demons. He is well-versed in hand-to-hand combat and the use of many types of weapons. His preferred weapon is the bow and he is one of the best archers among all of the Shadowhunters. Although he had not killed a demon until he was eighteen, something unusual in his society, Alec is a skilled fighter with blades and bow. Many beings think of him as a lesser fighter but he regularly is paired with the ‘best Shadowhunter of their generation’ and holds his own whenever he goes on missions with Jace. He also showed that he can act decisively and is deadly in a fight when protecting those he cares about. His experience with more modern weapons, such as guns, is limited since those types of weapons do not work well with the kinds of magic Nephilim use while fighting the supernatural.
Whether it is because of his runes or just a natural aptitude, Alec has a talent for picking up details. He pieces things together and draws conclusions that others miss. His foster brother teases him about not paying attention in history class, but Alec is the one that remembers obscure bits of information that help them rescue the beings that Sebastian kidnapped. He also knows a variety of languages thanks to his training as a Shadowhunter.

[The image that is broadcast on the network is of a young man rubbing the back of his neck until he realizes what he’s doing and abruptly stops. His expression is carefully neutral as he begins to speak.]
My name is Alec Lightwood. I was in New York before I came here. I’m looking for my family. Isabelle, Izzy, or Jace…
[As he speaks his expression relaxes, making it obvious that he cares for these two beings even when he lets out a frustrated huff.]
Jace Wayland, Morgenstern, Herondale, Lightwood… He could be using any of those names.
[Pausing, he tries to look stern but his lips twitch with a hint of amusement.]
Jace, if you’re here you’d better not be laughing because I have no idea what last name you’re using.
I’m also looking for someone named Magnus Bane. [For the first time since speaking, Alec begins to relax, eyes bright with affection as he begins to smile.] He’s – uh – very colorful. And sparkly. He’s probably complaining about the lack of glitter here.
