PERSONALITY:

At the beginning of the series, Alec acts like he is the typical Shadowhunter (Nephilim). He is aloof and seems to dislike anyone who is not a part of his family or who isn’t Nephilim. As time passes, he begins to evolve realizing that many of his culture’s rules are wrong and that he doesn’t need to hide who he truly is. Eventually, he learns to live the life that he wants, not the traditional one that is expected for him.

Overall, Alec is an introvert but, as he has matured through the series, and has learned to accept himself, he has become more outspoken. He is not someone who is talkative, but he expresses himself when needed, and has begun to be more communicative with others. When he does speak, he is straightforward and blunt, sometimes seeming rude despite his intentions. This can be tempered with a big brother kindness that makes him a peacekeeper among his group of friends.

He is someone who is extremely loyal to his siblings and friends. Alec is the protector in his family and helped raise his siblings when his parents were away because of Clave (the Shadowhunter’s ruling body) business. When hunting demons with his siblings, he would watch their backs instead of rushing into the fight. Because of this role, he didn’t kill a demon until he was eighteen, something extremely unusual, and thought to be an embarrassment, among Nephilim. He is also the healer in the group, tending injuries and trying to reassure those he cares about.

At times, Alec can let his self-doubts get the better of him. He can be prone to jealousy and after years of being ignored by others, he can feel like he is 'trivial'. Contributing to this self-doubt is the fact that Magnus is over four hundred years old and has had numerous lovers. When he learns about some of the more risqué parts of Magnus’ past without the context of Magnus’ life experiences, Alec becomes jealous of Magnus’ previous lovers. He also realizes that because of Magnus’ immortality, they can’t have the ‘happily ever after’ that most couples have.

Alec allows these darker emotions get the better of him, resulting in a break up with his boyfriend, Magnus Bane. Since then, he has realized the consequences of his doubts and the lies that accompanied his jealousy, and is working on dealing with these emotions.

Despite loving deeply, Alec is self-aware enough that when he gets a chance to reunite with Magnus, he doesn't automatically say yes. He loves Magnus but he knows that they will keep hurting each other if they cannot work out their differences and learn to trust each other. Even knowing how much refusing will hurt them both, he is willing to walk away so that they will not continue along the destructive path they had been following.

When he does this, Magnus agrees to begin working things out which gives Alec a choice to have what would be a 'normal' life. He could settle into the type of role that is expected of a Shadowhunter: find a Nephilim guy to date since it's becoming more socially acceptable and grow old with someone. It is something that he thought he wanted more than anything but he realizes that he loves Magnus too much to settle for that old dream. He knows there will be misunderstandings and pain, but he is willing to take the risk of loving someone who is immortal.

Instead, he chooses to love someone despite all the pain that might be involved in loving someone who is immortal and according to many of his peers and some members of his family, is socially unacceptable. The future pain is something he is willing to accept if it means even a day of happiness with Magnus.

This helps show that Alec is a young man full of contradictions. He was desperate for his parents' approval yet outed himself in front of his family and the majority of Shadowhunters so that Magnus knew his true feelings. This could have resulted in him being exiled and never seeing his family, but Alec believed it was something he needed to do so that Magnus would no longer doubt him.

He is a warrior who hates killing the innocent even when that death is a mercy. When he was in the middle of a battle and had to killed humans who could not be saved from the magic inflicted on them, he wept at the loss of life and over the horrors that others can commit against each other.

He can seem cool and aloof but laughs over silly songs that he hears on the subway. He can be stubborn and snarky but tries to help his sister when her heart is breaking. He will also protect those he doesn't know and ignore the rules for the greater good. Numerous times he defied the Shadowhunter's laws to help his family and the people he loves.

Alec is growing as a person and learning to see beyond the narrow confines he was shown as 'right'. He loves fiercely and at times, impatiently. He is loyal and shows kindness in unexpected ways, offering help to those that most Nephilim would scorn. Alec is someone steadily learning about himself and learning to accept himself despite years of believing that there is something wrong with him.

ABILITIES/POWERS:

Physiology:

Shadowhunters were originally created when a human summoned an Angel to beg for help to protect the world from demons. The Angel, Raziel, mixed the blood of humans and angels to create a group of warriors, Nephilim or Shadowhunters, who had enhanced strength, speed, agility, stamina, and coordination. These abilities are further enhanced through training and the use of angelic runes. When Nephilim are children, they go through a ritual to protect them from possession and other demonic influences.

The Sight:

Because of their unique physiology and their runes, Shadowhunters are able to see what most people would think of as the supernatural. They can also see through illusions and glamours.

Angelic Artifacts and Runes:

Nephilm are descended from the mixing of Angel and human, Shadowhunters so they are able to use items that have angelic power and also use angelic runes. Certain objects, such as their weapons, witchlights, and steles can only be used by Nephilim or those with a connection to Angels. When a Shadowhunter picks up a Seraph blade and names it after an Angel, the blade will glow brightly. If a non-Shadowhunter picks up the weapon, nothing will happen, even if the being names the blade. This connection to Angels also allows them to use runes or marks.

Runes are symbols that are burned into the skin that augment certain abilities in Shadowhunters. Permanent runes are black on the skin and never fade except in a few rare cases. Temporary runes last for a finite time and will fade once they have been ‘burned up’. Examples of permanent runes are angelic power, voyance, and deflect. Ones such as stamina and soundless are temporary and leave scars after use. Shadowhunters can also mark runes on objects, allowing them to do things such as unlock doors, strengthen weapons, or see through walls.

Fighting:

Alec was trained almost from birth to fight demons. His training included hand to hand combat and the use of a variety of weapons. His greatest strength is the bow; he is one of the greatest archers among the Nephilim. Although he is not thought of as one of the best warriors among the Nephilim, he can keep up with the best Shadowhunter of their generation. He has also learned how to compensate for his weaknesses so he can fight with Shadowhunters who have a higher skill level than his own. Usually, if Alec is not using his bow, he fights with a Seraph blade or with a staff.

Parabatai:

During his training, he became soul bound to his best friend, Jace Wayland (Lightwood-Herondale). This bond improves a Shadowhunter’s fighting ability and any runes drawn by parabatai are stronger than those drawn by other Shadowhunters. The bond amplifies their abilities. They are synchronized in battle, fighting as two halves of a whole. At times, they can feel each other’s emotions and draw strength from each other. It has been. Because it is a soul bond, in a way parabatai are soul mates, which can add emotional complications to the bond.

Being parabatai can also be a weakness for the pair because when one dies, the other will feel the loss. Many Shadowhunters are driven crazy with grief over this or the bond severing will kill them. Distance can also weaken the bond, but when Alec was separated from Jace, he felt a faint connection to him even when Jace was in another reality than Alec. While on the ship, Alec will feel a faint echo of the parabatai bond, but it will not break since this could drive him mad or kill him.

INVENTORY:

The black leather pants, jacket, boots, and gloves that make up a Shadowhunter’s gear

A plain steel knife hidden in his boot

His bow and quiver which holds runed arrows

Seraph blade

A ring similar to his Lightwood family ring that warns the wearer that demons are nearby

Witchlight

Two steles (The device that allows Shadowhunters to draw runes on themselves. He always carries a spare for his siblings since they have a tendency to lose them.)

Cell phone with headphones

Staring out the window, Alec wasn’t sure how he should react to the swath of stars spread out in front of him. It should be awe-inspiring or terrifying, instead it was just lonely. He was in a world like the one the movies that he watched with Izzy and Magnus. He could almost hear Simon’s voice adding one of those monologues from the sci-fi series he said they had to see. A reference that Alec would have pretended went over his head but he understood because he’d watched it with Magnus on one of their first dates.

Magnus. They should be together, learning about new worlds and seeing the vastness of the universe. So should his family. They should all be here. By the Angel, he missed them. Automatically, his hand went to the parabatai rune on his side. Closing his eyes, he focused on the bond, faint but steady, proving that Jace was alive and safe. That meant the rest of them were as well. Jace would protect them. He’d keep them going, keep them safe, until they were all together again.

Jace was probably driving Magnus crazy while they searched for him. The thought made Alec chuckle despite the hallow ache in his chest. Maybe they’d be the next ones to arrive. If anyone could find a way to track him down, to join him here, it’d be those two. Then Clary, Izzy, and Simon would follow.

The thought made it a little bit easier to deal with the loss. Eventually, they’d be with him. Reaching out, he placed his hand on the glass or whatever it was that made up the window. The future was supposed to be better. Maybe when Magnus arrived, they’d find someplace where no one gave Magnus a second, fearful look because of his catlike eyes. There had to be places where it wouldn’t seem strange that the two of them were together. It was getting better back home, but the idea of being able to live without that scrutiny was appealing even if it meant being a reality away from the rest of his family and friends.

Sighing, he scrubbed a hand through his hair, not noticing how it spiked upward, and then moved toward the desk. Sitting down, he opened one of the journals he’d found in the market. The gold cover seemed appropriate for Magnus. The others were for the rest of his family, the colors carefully selected because of some memory that was important to Alec.

Picking up the pen, he stared at the blank page. Magnus had done this for him, now it was time for Alec to give his boyfriend the same kind of gift. Magnus might never see the journals, but assuming that meant giving up hope. Alec refused to do that. Someday, he’d see them again.

Someday.

Reassured by that thought, he began to write.

Dear Magnus…
