history

Before the events of Evil Within, Joseph worked alongside Sebastian Castellanos as his partner at the Krimson City Police Department. During those years, he worked hard to not only do his job well, but also hold Sebastian together after his daughter died and wife disappeared. When Sebastian fell deep into drinking, he was forced to turn his partner into internal affairs to save him from himself. Even with this, Sebastian and Joseph worked well together and eventually took on the rookie Juli Kidman.

The three of them were called into the disturbance at Beacon Mental Hospital. A detailed account of his time inside the Evil With game can be found here. The three of them fell into the snare of the STEM system that was created to unite minds together in one computer like reality built around a core (a human brain). The three get separated often throughout their time in STEM while being hunted and taunted by a man named Ruvik. (The brain that this STEM system is built on.) Joseph is often reunited with Sebastian and helps his partner work their way through the different areas of the twisted reality of a psychopath’s mind.

Often times, Joseph feels himself getting lost and turning into a Haunted that is much like a zombie that falls to the will of the Core (Ruvik). He fights the desire to give up and even tells Sebastian about how it was like thinking about wanting to commit suicide just to let it end. With Sebastian’s help, he manages to pull through each of those times. Close to the end, he tries to stop Kidman from killing a boy named Leslie that is trapped in STEM with them. Kidman shoots Joseph and they think he is dead. He is not seen leaving with Sebastian in the end.

In Evil Within 2, Kidman reveals to Sebastian that Joseph is not dead and is in the custody of Mobius. His whereabouts are unknown.

personality

Compared to his colleagues, Joseph is considerably more passive, observant and meticulous to a fault. He frequently takes notes whenever he sees something unusual, and would almost instantly know what notes to consult when he encounters their corresponding puzzle(s). On more than one occasion this habit of his has saved both his and Sebastian's lives.

Joseph is kind to others but hard on himself, and he doesn't give up on something once he has committed to it. When Sebastian looked like he was in danger of losing his badge, Joseph took the only choice he thought he had left and reported Sebastian to Internal Affairs.

Like Kidman, Joseph is steadfast and orderly yet this does not make him combative with his partner and close friend, Sebastian Castellanos who has shown flexibility in breaking the police guidelines to get results. He has shown considerable tolerance for Castellanos' ethically-sketchy behavior due to his past tragedies, but it was his friend's alcoholism that finally caused Joseph to take litigation against Castellanos out of fear for his well-being. This saves both of their careers, but also puts a strain on their friendship.

Despite his noticeably more chipper personality compared to his partners, Joseph is especially vulnerable to feelings of guilt, as demonstrated when he briefly transforms and attacks his colleagues, and his descent into depression can be alarmingly fast whenever that happens. During his time within STEM, Joseph has displayed suicidal "episodes" and this becomes more apparent during his descent into a Haunted. Ruvik elaborates to Sebastian that Joseph couldn't live with himself after what he [Ruvik] made him do. Presumably this was attacking Kidman when he came close to fully transforming, and this exacerbated his bleak outlook of ever truly escaping.

Joseph is only human; however, he is very good at his job as a detective. He does not give up easily and tries to figure out whatever problem is in front of him. Whether it is sniping, pistols, or even an axe, he can wield each weapon well in defense of his friends or to complete his goals.
